Tom Tom Club – Genius Of Love

| On 31, Jan 2011

Originally released in 1981, reaching the top spot on the U.S. Dance Chart and peaking at number 65 on the UK charts, the synthetic, technologically antiquated, proto-hop single ‘Genius of Love’ has been re-released to mark its 30th anniversary all in an effort to reclaim custody of the song.

This comes as no surprise as the band’s website lists 47 Hip-Hop and Soul remixes of the original cut, recorded originally by a group that consisted of the husband-and-wife team of ex–Talking Heads Tina Weymouth (bass) and Chris Frantz (drums).

There is an irony here in the timing of the re-release of this track, a classic that has been used, abused and thrown away by so many a DJ, because it sounds so retro that it has managed to hit the contemporary mainstream market.

With the dance scene so desperate for new sounds to excite those tired of banging their heads against unchanging soundscapes this track is old enough to be reborn and to re-invent the club scene as we know it once more.

Check out all those bleep freaks and electro revivalists, and say that the dance cycle has not gone full circle.
