Chibuku Shake Shake Saturday 5th Feb @ The Masque, Liverpool

| On 31, Jan 2011

Chibuku serves up its first proper three-roomer of 2011. Fresh from the success of the Jan residents party, all attention now focuses on the first full show for over two months with no less than two album launches and an Ink debut forming one of the most intriguingly poised sessions to rock Liverpool. And yes, it’s a bit special; sometimes you don’t need to know a great deal about biogs, what people have been up to and where they are at. Such is the calibre of this Sat 5th Feb party that it pretty much speaks for itself. Chibuku is back – and back with a huge bang.

True Chibuku legend and vixen of the airwaves, Annie Mac, returns to the club for another rousing set to present some of the most on the cusp music around.  The mercurial Annie is a champion of new sounds and spinners, and is always guaranteed to bring the roof down in The Theatre, her spiritual Chibuku room. Following in the illustrious footsteps of Pendulum, Sub Focus, Chase and Status and Magnetic Man, Nero are set to be the next big breakthrough dance act with 2011 their year. Their latest bass-throbbing single, Me & You, is already hammering the airwaves and set to be an anthem of the summer, and their hugely-anticipated album, Welcome Reality, drops shortly. Chibuku’s own James Rand is on hand to get proceedings fired up.

The Loft will be shuddering to warped bass lines and big beats. DJ Hype headlines; he’s widely considered one of the pillars of modern drum and bass, with a pivotal role in expanding the genre across the land, and a consistent fan of the Buku faithful. Optical follows with an old school set dripping with hot jungle mayhem so good you’ll think you are trekking through the Amazon. Optical has been spinning since the mid-90s, so expect deep crate and dubplate digging for his set. And recent new dad and Liverpool icon Futurebound completes the room. His own Viper Recordings has gone from strength to unfettered strength through his revered productions and DJ sets.

Local upstarts Abandon Silence host Ink. Regular players just down the road at The Shipping Forecast, Andy and the team have established themselves as one of the city’s newest promoters and it’s so far, so very good. Here they offer the innovative young London producer and DJ James Blake, whose eponymous debut album drops on Monday 7th Feb. His three Eps during 2011 caught the ears of many key figures heralding a truly original new talent – so catch him at Chibuku and Ink’s particular intimacy before he really takes off. Abandon Silence also present Chibuku regular Rich Furness and their very own duo, Shepherd and Horza, for a fine evening of aural enrichment.
