Øya and Field Day are AIF Twin festivals. Based on the twin towns concept, festivals are paired with likeminded and similarly structured festivals from countries from around the world. Participating festivals will help promote their twin’s festival locally.

Lucy Swann

Oslo born Lucy Swann has distinguished herself from the the rest of the pack by her expressive vocal abilities and her strong live performances.  In 2010 she released her critically acclaimed debut album “La Petite Mort” which saw her compared to the likes of Kate Bush and Beyonce. Aftenposten (top Norwegian broadsheet) extolled her to be “…one of the freshest, catchiest voices in Norwegian pop music in a very long time.”. Lucy is also set to play the Brighton Great Escape Festival this year.

Team Me

If you believe bloggers and journalists all around the world, Team Me is one of the hottest newcomers of 2011. It all started out as an accidental success when Marius D. Hagen and his private, little side project Team Me ended up in the finals of NRK P3´s (Norwegian National Radio) Best new band/song contest. The band are set to play Great Escape this year.

Fiction

With their off-kilter blend of dark indie describe themselves as ‘highly strung young men trying to find meaning in noises’. The band played their first gig together in May 2009 and have since played at Offset Festival in Essex, the Huw Stephens-curated S?n Festival in Cardiff and recorded live sessions for BBC Radio 1, BBC 6 Music and Diesel Radio. The band are currently in the studio working on their second single.

Not Squares

Experimental trio Not Squares hail from Belfast, Northern Ireland. They have a unique approach to playing live. When starting out recording, the band tried to ‘capture’ the live performance and opted instead for experimenting with programming synth lines, routing them through our guitar pedals, and having fun with the vocals. The result is a sparkling new debut album Yeah OK out now Dublin’s Richter Collective.

Øya festival is the largest outdoor music festival in Oslo, the capital of Norway and one of the most discerning in Europe. Promoting a diverse line up from across the globe, 2010 saw standout performances from the likes of Pavement, M.I.A, Iggy & The Stooges, Flaming Lips, LCD Soundsystem, The XX, The Specials, Robyn, Paul Weller and The National.

The first confirmed acts for 2011’s festival show no let up in Øya’s firm belief in showcasing the hottest and most diverse artists from across the globe.

With their sophomore album one of the most anticipated of the year, this will be Fleet Foxes second appearance at Øya, having played a memorable set in 2009 as the sun went down over the lake. Joining Fleet Foxes are alt-country legends The Jayhawks (their first confirmed European festival appearance of the original line up), critically lauded US acts Warpaint and Twin Shadow, whilst Texan post-rockers Explosions in the Sky and Norway’s own 120 Days will be pushing sonic frontiers to within touching distance of the Arctic Circle.

More than 200 bands will play over the August weekend; expect more headliners to be announced very soon alongside the best in Norwegian acts.

Øya is held in a medieval park, a picturesque spot surrounded by sandy beaches, the Oslo Fjords, the green Ekeberg Hill and the Oslo skyline.  Rooted deep in history, the medieval park is also the place where the capital of Norway was founded a thousand years ago. For 4 days in the middle of August, the Medieval Park in Oslo is transformed into an arena for musical, visual and cross-cultural performances. The Øya Festival is an energetic and symbiotic experience with a unique atmosphere and audience that bares resemblance to no other.

Amidst the festival area of trees, green grass and water, the festival is well equipped with stages, shopping streets and small shops serving food (almost 100% organic and locally sourced) and drink. The site creates an exciting rendezvous between nature and culture, being just a short walk from the city centre of Oslo.

Øya Festival is officially recognised as one of the greenest festivals in Europe, having won the “Greenest Festival in Europe” at the European Festival Awards 2010 and also the ”Green ’n’ Clean” award.
