THE BLACK CROWES recently wrapped up their last scheduled U.S. show in San Francisco as part of a six-show sold-out run at the Fillmore December 12-19–and will embark on their final eight shows in Europe (July 7-18), concluding their 20th anniversary tour in (appropriately) Amsterdam with a two-night engagement at the Paradiso. The band recently announced they are going on an indefinite hiatus to spend time with family and work on other projects.
In anticipation of the upcoming lengthy hiatus, the iconic and influential band recorded and released CROWEOLOGY (Silver Arrow/Megaforce Records) their first-ever double acoustic album, which features new arrangements of their best-loved songs and the band’s catalogue picks. In a four-star Rolling Stone review, David Fricke said, “the album is much better than a greatest-hits affair, it’s a reason to go on (8/3/10),” while the Boston Globe’s Zeth Lundy called The Black Crowes “one of the country’s most underrated and misunderstood bands (8/9/10).”
Fans and media alike embraced the acoustic/electric shows. Gary Graff of the Oakland Press (Detroit, MI) described the August 20 show as “…a long and exciting set of organic, flowing rock ‘n’ roll, filling three hours of music (plus a 15-minute intermission) with instrumental dexterity and extemporaneous jamming that drew influence from, and even reached the level of, forebears such as the Grateful Dead and the Allman Brothers Band (8/21/10) and Evan Schlansky of American Songwriter noted that “the band seemed at the peak of their powers (9/13/10).” Writing at Rollingstone.com, David Fricke said: “…this lineup is the best the Robinsons have had in the band’s two decades, and it is playing at magnum force…It is hard to believe that a band playing at this level is about to power down. But if that’s the way it’s gotta be, then the Crowes are leaving at a peak. See them there while you can (9/13/10).” The band’s musical contributions were saluted along the summer’s tour route when they were inducted into theGeorgia Music Hall of Fame (September 11 in North Atlanta) at the 32nd Annual Georgia Music Hall of Fame Awards Show.
