Tough times lead to musical creativity and although Greece seems an unlikely spot for dance music’s hottest new talent – the recent economic meltdown has meant that an already passionate people are throwing themselves into whatever release is possible.
For George Fotiadis – the man behind Basement Freaks, that release has always been the music. His latest party fuelled Long Player, ‘Something Freaky’, drops on seminal electro bass label, Jalapeno Records, this December. Jam-packed with 12 bass laden hits, this album looks set to sizzle our wintry club-land this season.
Having topped Beatport download charts under his various guises, he also runs his own label Bombastic Jam from Thessaloniki and has DJ’ed at such legendary parties as Fabric in London and Exit Festival in Serbia – two spots high up on any DJ’s dream gig list.
George put out original material and remixes on a wide variety of labels like Good Groove, Funk Weapons, Wack and Sunset Soul. His uncanny ability to crank out an infectious groove garnered kudos from fellow stalwarts like Kraak & Smaak, A Skillz and Stereo MCs; and made George a firm favourite on the Ibiza party circuit.
Spearheading the mashup madness that was the nu-funk scene, George quickly decided he was happier making original music with a singer. In 2009, whilst living in Germany, he met soul singer Jazzmin in a second hand music shop. Jazzmin provided the female vocals for, ‘Something Freaky’, before moving back to Thessaloniki where he hooked up with Georges Perin – easily the tastiest thing to have come out of Greece since the mezze platter.
Jazzmin and Georges P were the final pieces of the puzzle and Basement Freaks was finally complete. Now with Jalapeno Records on board, the band is primed and ready for the big push.
Jalapeno Records – one of several UK labels in the running to sign the project, proceeded to release the Disco Life EP which gained plays from Annie Nightingale on Radio 1, Craig Charles on 6 Music and Ali B on Kiss amongst many DJ tastemakers who supported the project.
Now with the album complete and Something Freaky being prepared as the lead single, Basement Freaks are honing their hybrid live / DJ show and getting ready for the album to drop.
