My Jerusalem – Bury it Low

| On 16, Jan 2011

New Orleans Indie Rock band My Jerusalem have an impressive pedigree, it must be said. Formed by members of The Twilight Singers, Polyphonic Spree, Bishop Allen and Great Northern, the combination of achingly hip American indie bands that My Jerusalem is derived from kind of seals a reputation as America’s coolest band, because of this, I should be predestined to hate their guts but Bury It Low is, much to my chagrin, pretty damn good.

Their sound is extremely hard to pigeon-hole, and yet somehow warmly familiar. This combination might sound like an oxymoron but it’s true, it tumbles in on jangly, picked electric guitar chords, effectively setting the listener up for one heck of a shock when singer Jeff Klein howls the opening lyrics like a desperate lover. After this the track goes from strength to strength, Klein displaying an impressively expressive voice once you get passed the incongruity of him screaming like a man possessed over a relatively laid back folk-rock track. This also displays one of the disgracefully few instances of synths and distorted guitars working in perfect harmony, so for that it must be applauded. In all, pretty damn good, the perfect mix of hinting at potential and good song writing careers are built on. Ones to watch for sure.
