It will blow your mind // Bloc. 2011 gathers pace
aaamusic | On 14, Dec 2010
Bloc. is offering up an early Christmas present, with the announcement of techno aristocracy and a fresh wave of collaborators stepping up to curate their own stages.
A Guy Called Gerald reminds us where it all began with a strictly pre-’88 set on the I Love Acid stage. Bloc. hosts a rare UK appearance from the Spanish techno uberlord Oscar Mulero and welcomes back four-to-the-floor club-demolition experts The Advent and Billy Nasty. Plus a late addition to the Overkill stage is Chicago’s X-rated booty shaker DJ Funk.
Berghain regular Ben Klock will be doing it dubby style on the Modeselektion stage, curated by Modeselektor. The restlessly inventive party starters screech into Bloc. with a lineup so futuristic it may not have even happened yet, with longtime collaborator Apparat, Hyperdub darling Ikonika and Hessle Audio boss Ramadanman standing alongside Monkeytown’s Siriusmo.
London outfit Plex are way out in front when it comes to booking heads-down techno. They’ll be bringing the kind of lineup you can stand a spoon up in – Sandwell’s Silent Servant and industrial Berliners Ancient Methods go jaw-to-jaw with Datassette and TVO with the whole bun-fight refereed by the ever-special Plex DJ residents. Whatever you do, don’t miss out…
The Glaswegian Numbers crew have barely paused for breath in their recent quest for world domination. When they’re not ripping up world-class events like Sonar they’re releasing music from the same laser-sharp artists Bloc. is proud to feature – Roska, SBTRKT, and their headline act, Jamie xx, whose band, the xx, have been doing pretty well for themselves.
Bringing a taste of Croatian seaside magic to Minehead may sound like a tall order, but not for Outlook – and certainly not with the bass-driven, ragga-tinged lineup they’re bringing to Bloc. With 10-piece live band Gentlemen’s Dub Club headlining, and Iration Steppaz and Exodus – two acts at the forefront of soundsystem culture in the UK – joined by upfront party mechanics Redlight, Kenny Ken and Top Cat, we’re talking big, big vibez.
No-one can accuse Bleep.com of not knowing their onions; they’ve applied their encyclopedic knowledge of all things synthesised to craft a connoisseur’s choice for their Bloc. stage: the hypnotic grooves of Kyle Hall; the padded lushness of Luke Abbott; and the warbled mentalism of Boxcutter. And there’s an as-yet unannounced headline act that’ll completely blow your mind.
