On 24th January 2011 Bahamian R’n’B star David Hanna delivers his infectious debut single, ‘Do To Me,’ through Sheppard Boy Records.
Fusing heavy sub-bass lines and warm melodic strings, ‘Do To Me’ is a synthesis of polished R’n’B, pop and Miami Bass with a subtle Caribbean flavour; what David likes to call ‘New Island Soul.’
“My music is written for the mainstream,” confesses David. “But its heart is most definitely from the Bahamas, the soul of the Caribbean is in every note.” ‘Do To Me’ delivers with its synth-heavy rhythm and classic R’n’B mid-tempo groove, but listen carefully and you’ll hear David’s silken vocals lapped by sounds of the Atlantic ocean, “a definite calypso undercurrent,” says laidback David. “I’m certainly R’n’B based, but I try to bring my culture into everything I do. This includes our local dialect, as well as elements of calypso and Rake ‘n’ Scrape (the hugely popular and traditional style of music from the Bahamas).”
Hailing from the tropical paradise of Nassau, David Hanna is no ordinary island boy. Performing from an early age in the school choir, David grew up competing in local talent shows, listening to Motown and the likes of The Temptations, The Twilights, followed by Babyface and Boyz II Men, before joining 4-part harmony group Four Minutes to Twelve. The group were together for seven years and enjoyed a successful career playing local festivals and parties, before splitting in 2005. “Too much drama,” remembers David. “The others weren’t as focused or dedicated and time’s not on anyone’s side. I want to make my own legacy and not have anyone slowing me down.”
Since 2005, David has spent the majority of his time working with other local artists, becoming one of the hottest producers in Nassau, whilst slowly plotting his solo career, writing material and perfecting his live shows. ‘Do To Me’ is the first single to be taken from his upcoming debut album, a tropical melting pot of pop, R’n’B and the colourful sounds of the Caribbean, which “really captures the true island spirit,” promises David. “I’ve been working on it for a couple of years, testing the songs in my live shows, and so far the response has been great. I’m confident people will like it.” The album, “The War Outside,” is due next year, and will definitely prove David is a musical force to be reckoned with. David Hanna is ready to take his music to the world.
‘Do To Me’ is out on January 24th. Look out for London live dates, to be announced soon.
