Goodluck Jonathan – This Is Our Way Out EP2

This Is Our Way Out EP2 is the second EP of a series of three to be released by Goodluck Jonathan.
The first track on the EP is Fatman, with a distinctive marching sound and sharp guitar riffs. Creepy, sharp vocals and heavy drums incursions provide ground to parallelisms to early garage sounds. It definitely sounds “vintage” and dark, not the average radio friendly track. Which is exactly why I like it.
Fall Of America is, unfortunately, a much more mainstream and radio friendly track. Not much to say about this tune: it’s the classic room filler and head nodder at gigs, but it just sounds like a copycat of other bands. It is, nonetheless, a well constructed song with an interesting instrumental part, but it lacks of the originality Fatman has.
Jangly riffs and early 80s sound lead the way to Backs To The Wall, an energetic number which winks at the early punk atmospheres. Good use of synths and angry vocals help giving this track some sparkle.
Closing the EP is Away From Here. Kicking off with the sound of distant guitars, recreating the echo effect, it is an enjoyable, haunting ballad, which provides ground for the band to experiment with a softer and perhaps sophisticated sound, as well as ensuring us that Brookes vocal skills are quite versatile. Perhaps the best track of the EP, followed by Fatman.
Overall, an enjoyable EP which shows different aspects and skills of the band. I’m curious of how the part three will sound like.
