UK 5 piece Dog Is Dead comprise a somewhat eccentric meeting of minds between skate kids and aspiring thespians. They create their own intricate blend of rhythm and harmony, skipping across afro rhythms, soaring choruses and campfire melodies. Their set is a collection of stunning pop songs.
Meeting at school, Dog Is Dead have mapped out a unique sound that blends their acknowledged love of the likes of Paul Simon and Cap ‘N’ Jazz with the more contemporary sounds of Mystery Jets and Fleet Foxes amongst other. Possibly the best (if not the only) accurate description of their sound to date comes from band leader and bass player Rob Milton who styles Dog Is Dead as ‘uplifting pop for jazz junkies and choir folk’.
The band are two thirds of their way through a trilogy of self release singles on their own ‘Your Childhood’ label.
‘Glockenspiel Song’ and ‘Young’ propelled the band beyond the status of biggest band in their native Nottingham to a national stage, clocking up a multitude of radio play across Radio 1, Radio 2, 6 Music, XFM and championed by the UK taste makers like Huw Stephens, Lauren Laverne, Edith Bowman, Dermot O’Leary and Kissy Sellout who even made his own remix of their debut song. Furthermore they crossed over enough to take Radio 5 single of the week with each release and received Radio 6 playlist for the second single. Their appearance at Glastonbury gained TV exposure via BBC 2, the only unsigned band to feature in the channel’s coverage.
The final instalment of the trilogy, ‘River Jordan’ hits stores in February 2011 and co-incides with the band’s first Radio 1 session and an appearance playing live in the final episode of massively influential teen program Skins, following in the footsteps of Foals and Crystal Castles. Their debut album is one of 2011’s most exciting prospects.
To quote the most read music magazine in the UK, The Fly, ‘we defy you not to sway with jubilation to their tunes’.
