Chibuku Shake Shake presents: Keep It Unreal: Mr Scruff Saturday 27th November @ The Masque

| On 15, Nov 2010

Capping off a fine month of November eclecticism across all three of its hallowed Masque rooms, Chibuku welcomes back one unique man who effectively does the same job single-handedly: Mr. Scruff. One of the earliest guests the club first booked in its formative heydays at the start of the last decade, Andy Carthy has remained one of the long-standing allies of Liverpool’s Buku, and for recent gigs has taken over the Theatre for an all night long session from start to finish.

A true music buff who continues to search the world for new sounds and beats, for obscure rhythms and new expressive ways in music from all corners of the globe, his endless pursuit of fresh discoveries keeps his sound at creative fore of DJing and production. Not forgetting the tea obsession and flying the Ninja Tune flag with continued releases – including the 10th anniversary re-release of Keep It Unreal to October’s Make a Change mix on Tru Thoughts – Chibuku welcomes its old friend back.

Citing everything from funk, soul and hip hop and jazz, disco and rhythm & blues to reggae, Ska and Afrobeat through to electrofunk, dubstep and gospel, Mr. Scruff embraces seemingly almost every genre of music possible. He explains that, “During my sets I can play a lot of esoteric and unusual music, as playing for the duration of the night enables me to create a very relaxed atmosphere, before increasing the energy levels at my own pace, taking in many kinds of music along the way. Although I am a fairly technical DJ, it is vital to remember that the most important skill for a DJ is to play great records in the right order. Each record must complement the one before, and introduce the one that follows. Beatmatching is an obvious way of linking records, but there are other common factors, such as lyrical themes & complimentary keys that a DJ can use to aid the transition. Each piece of music has a mood and an energy level, and orchestrated carefully, you can create an atmosphere where every record that comes in is precisely right for that moment.”

Embracing such a wide template creates truly unique aural odysseys, with each set part education, part party and all good time fun. Mr. Scruff continues his enduring relationship with Chibuku on Saturday 27th Nov, which sees him leading the club towards its final gig of the year on NYE.
