Circus presents Cocoon
Friday 26th November @ Nation
Cocoon is back. Last December the Germanic pioneers descended upon Liverpool and Circus for a frenetic hi-octane soiree, balancing their esteemed reputation for high end production alongside an unparalleled resume of electrifying electronic music. That gig represented a huge coup for Yousef and the Circus team in bringing Sven’s party to the city, with the Circus founder and resident also releasing his seminal Come Home track through Sven’s label on the Sounds of the Tenth Season Ibiza mix album.
Now, after a year of showcases across the globe, headlining their own festivals and continuing their status as Ibiza’s number one party, they’re back at Nation to deliver another journey of electronic escapism. Utilising only two rooms this time, the focus is on two arenas that in themselves are worthy of selling out as standalone shows.
There’s no man better to head this up than someone who defines Cocoon’s spirit and effervescent essence, techno lord Sven Vath. The tyrant continues to reinvent his heritage, consistently changing and moving forward with the times. One of the dominant players in the nascent German scene of the late eighties, he oversaw the development of techno and trance in Europe, defined underground dance music as the century progressed and now sets the standard as a techno powerhouse.
Sven’s weekly Monday parties are the club night du jour In Ibiza, boasting the heavyweights of the thriving scene including Ritchie Hawtin, Ricardo Vilalobos and Loco Dice each tussling weekly with Sven. Oscillating techno, skittering house, panoramic electro and all the flickering genres in between; Vath’s furious ensemble is always the best diffusion of dancefloor hedonism. People are still talking about his 2009 set, and once again he is at the epicentre of the greatness of this show.
Vath will be joined in the Main Room by Yousef. As 2010 draws to an end the year has proved to once again be his finest on record. A breathtaking season in Ibiza (debuts at Circo Loco have been matched by a continued residency at Space’s number one night as part of Carl Cox’s Revolution), Yousef has recently matched his global club dates – including a sensational back to back session at Miami’s Maison club with Carl – with his Intec smash 1000 Pictures, his 2nd EP on Monique Musique and also released the widely acclaimed double mix CD Circus Live Vol 1: released on CR2 Records, it features the past, present and future of Circus tracks.
Yousef’s club night presented the 500th Essential Mix’s live broadcast on Radio 1 at the start of the summer and ended it with the 8th birthday in September; the fancy dress Halloween party sold out a week before doors opened. Yousef’s Circus continues to evolve, educate and inspire.
Romanian house lynchpin Raresh is also in full effect, the regular sparring partner of Vilalobos and Ar:Pi:Ar component also riding high on the back of a momentous year as a solo DJ and artist. Resident for Circus, the legendary Café Mambo and iconic Space Ibiza, ultra DJ Alex Wolfenden supports this huge billing.
Over in the Courtyard bill topping duties are controlled by BookaShade, the Get Physical talismans playing a special live show. Over the past few years, very few producers can compete with this duo’s mesmeric command of electronica. Constantly see-sawing between atmospheric grooves and dreamy breakdowns, BookaShade’s sonic musings appear somewhere in between the cracks that genres conventions paper over, equal parts house, techno and electro. Their live show can claim to being worthy of the lineage left from electronica pioneers such as Orbital, Underworld and Leftfield, delivering huge tunes such as ‘Body Language’ on the stage they truly deserve.
Joining them will be Israeli techno tyrant Guy Gerber, one of the new breed of Middle Eastern DJs to have been broken into the UK by Circus. Having originally made a sonic storm on account of his edgy progressive house remixes and productions, Guy’s sound continues to make consistent evolutions. The metamorphosis has resulted in a sound that borrows from all corners, stripped back techno, warm and uplifting deep house and even the burgeoning psy-trance from which is country is famed. He blew Liverpool away on his Circus debut back in February, now returning with Sven and co who first supported his music for the first time back in 2006.
The final piece of the jigsaw comes in the shape of Onur Ozer who makes his debut. The Istanbul native has quickly become one of the vital representations of Cocoon’s brand of house and techno, adding to their continental ensemble of DJs and delivering time and time again for the brand. Lewis Boardman gets the party started.
