Café 1001 exuded the post punk sounds of LeeLou on Monday night as she celebrated the launch of her debut EP Kiss. Death. Love. Come. LeeLou’s impressive vocal range, edgy melodies and dark undertones stirred the small crowd as her powerful voice consumed the venue. LeeLou proved herself to be a creative artist not afraid of taking risks, with cutting lyrics and a performance that had the essence of true rock ‘n’ roll. There was a real rapport between artist and crowd allowing any mistakes, including having to restart one of the tracks, to be forgiven. LeeLou is at her best when belting out power notes, and in a live environment she really has the chance to showcase her vocal talents, something that comes across a lot more strongly in a performance than on the EP.
Her best track is the lyrically sharp Burn Your Houses Down, which seemed to inspire the most positive reaction from the crowd. Despite her obvious talents, the crowd seemed to be constantly changing throughout the set, as although her voice would rouse the attention of those stood outside, their attentions seemed to diminish after a song or two. LeeLou has an incredible voice and is a talented lyricist but her songs would benefit from being more accessible with catchy hooks and melodies that people could sing along with, thus allowing the crowd to participate rather than just observe the moment.
