Ali Campbell – Carrie Anne

UB 40’s frontman Ali Campbell is back with his fourth, (yes fourth) solo album to date. Taken from Great British Songs – a reggae re-interpretation of rock ‘n’ roll songs from the Sixties and Seventies. Lead single ‘Carrie Anne’ is a reinterpretation of a classic The Hollies track but that is about where the credibility ends. Earnest in its efforts, the reggae folk number’s guitar really irritate, whilst the auto tuned vocals are strained and the electronic beats are overtly mass generated. It’s a song that should have stayed in the genre it was born into; it’s not an interesting slice of modern life neither is it infused with modern beats, but rather tired clichéd throwbacks to the 80s.
