South Central – Demons

After a two year break from releasing music, South Central return with ‘Demons’ the first taste of their new album ‘Society Of The Spectacle’ that is set for release in 2011. The best way for me to describe what I encountered here is to simply say confusion. ‘Demons’ itself is an absolute monster of a track that will firmly stay in the scene for a good while to come, however, the sheer number of remixes on the single is just self indulgent. For example, the first remix is under thirty seconds long and feels like a taste of what is come; however, what is the point of having a taster when one is going to get to listen to the song in its entirety on the very next track!?
South Central claim to be the only true dance/ rock crossover and this track is a perfect example of why they feel that this is a fair title to award themselves. It reminds of Pendulum, The Prodigy and Daft Punk all in one filthy mix that is actually incredibly effective. However, the various mixes that are available don’t stray far enough from the original to be warranted inclusion in my opinion.
B Side ‘Nietzsche versus Nurture’ is much of the same although has more of a house feel about it than the lead track. There is no doubt that South Central have created something pretty special in ‘Demons’ but for me the four separate remixes of the same track left me feeling a little bit short changed.
