The Screening – You Look Much Better In The Dark

The Screening are a four-piece band from Leicester and I cannot avoid to note that this city is generating a very interesting music movement obviously headed by Kasabian. Their debut single “Diem”, was a good piece of indie rock blinking the eye to Ash, characterized by a powerful sound, so I listened to their second single expecting the same good level and more. You look much better in the dark was described by Tom Meighan like “a mega pop song and there is more” and he’s right, indeed it’s an indie-pop song taking inspiration from British Sea Power and Buzzcocks. It’s rhythms is fast-paced and it’s all thanks to the tight drums and energetic guitar riff that give the song a strong identity. Moreover the singer use his vocals with the right intensity giving the track dynamic but without screaming. All things considered it’s a very good single, well recorded and performed, I particularly appreciated the sudden and brusque end of the song. The B-side, Evolution, is more electronic and very catchy with its anthemic choruses. They introduced it with an old fashioned synth, but the whole tune is supported by frenetic and cold electronic sounds. That’s a good surprise because it means that The Screening are ready to experiment different genres, so I’m curious to hear their forthcoming album, ‘We’d All Better Learn How To Swim’ that is due to be recorded with Mark Needham (The Killers, We are scientists, Bloc Party) in LA, and is expected for release in March 2011.
