Hailing from Michigan’s ‘Rock City’ of Detroit – home to Diana Ross, The Supremes, The Stooges, Smokey Robinson – is 21 year old new pop sensation Alex Winston. Winston’s unique and refreshing sound navigates influential pillars as diverse as Feist, PJ Harvey, Arcade Fire, Lykke Li and Dolly Parton.

Classically trained in opera and bred on Americana, Alex’s music roots descend from Detroit. Her father bought her a guitar when she was just seven years old, and they would sit in the basement for hours practicing chord progressions and listening to songwriters like Carole King and Laura Nyro.

One of Alex’s most prominent memories of growing up in the city was when her mother snuck her out of school to take her to the Motown museum: “She told me that it would be one of the most important places I’d ever visit, and she was right” she recalls. Alex now resides in New York City, but Detroit, its musicians and her friends there are still the biggest influence in her life.

A multi-instrumentalist, Alex plays the guitar, pianos and drums on her four-songThe Basement Covers EP. Available as a free download, Winston takes on songs by The Rolling Stones, Mumford and Sons, Francis and the Lights, Teddy Bears and Jack Penate and adds her own twinkling melodies and wistful vocals to each track.

Winston’s debut single Choice Notes – out now on limited edition 7″ vinyl through HeavyRoc Music – is the first complete taste of her songs and was produced by New York’s hottest new whizz kids The Knocks (Rihanna, Ellie Goulding) who she is currently working with. A remix by Aspirins for My Children is also available as a free download online.

Alex Winston will play her first ever shows at CMJ this year before heading over to the UK for her debut performance in the UK, where she will play a one off date in London.
