‘Our Love Is A Broken Heart’ is the third single to be released by London based three piece Tape The Radio. Produced by Jim Lowe and mixed by Alan Moulder, it’s a big bold slice of anthemic rock that should further cement their growing reputation as a band on the up. Released on the 1st November it will be the first for new indie label Hi Tone Music, set up by former V2 Records head honcho David Steele.
Tape The Radio’s debut single, ‘Save A Life’, was released on their own Creeky Recordings label in July 2009, with each copy lovingly hand made, packaged and numbered by the boys themselves. It proved a winner, featuring in NME‘s “On The Stereo” section, and supported by NME Radio and BBC 6 Music. It also secured them a BBC Introducing session with Tom Robinson.
In December 2009, the seminal Too Pure Singles Club released a 7″ Vinyl of ‘Stay Inside’ which was again heavily supported by NME Radio and BBC6 Music, with Steve Lamacq in particular championing the band. It received the most radio play of any release through the Singles Club.
The band’s DIY ethic was also the reason legendary mixer Alan Moulder (The Killers, Depeche Mode, My Bloody Valentine) got involved. Front man Malcolm traipsed across London in the pouring rain to drop off some demos on spec at his studio and to his amazement Alan himself answered the door. Within days he contacted the band to say he loved the music and offered his services.
Tape The Radio first came into being in March 2008 when Ben Caruso (Bass) left his native San Francisco to team up with Canadian Bryan Mclellan (Drums) and Londoner Malcolm Carson (Vocals / Guitars) to form the band. They live in their studio on a junkyard next to a creek in Deptford, surrounded by mavericks who have become part of the TTR family.
The first year was spent locked away writing and recording new songs and it wasn’t until Ken The Mechanic (who works in the car garage next door to their rehearsal space, listens to the music through the walls during tea breaks and tells them what’s good and bad) gave his seal of approval that they felt they were ready to unleash their urgent, melancholic rush to the world. Pete The Dwarf (who when he’s not working at the garage performs with Iron Maiden and is a regular on the pantomime circuit) fixes the wheels on the TTR van and Rachel The Driver (who lives on a barge by the creek), drives the boys to gigs. Security Kev, who lives in a caravan in the yard, guards the studio.
On the live front 2010 has already seen TTR support a whole host of high profile artists, including Band Of Skulls, Plan B, The Noisettes and Stereophonics.
TTR’s debut album will be released in the spring of 2011.
