Dinosaur Pile Up – Mona Lisa

Ok, I’ve never made a secret of my love for Leeds grungers Dinosaur Pile Up, they can do no wrong in my mind. They have the right mix of irreverent humour, kick ass riffs, Sebadoh Heaviness and Ash melodies to make them palatable to anyone with a passing interest in this beautiful thing known as rock and roll. And while this particular single stands up in its own right, this is one of the weakest they’ve released.
I assure you, dear reader, the song itself is great, about singer Matt Bigland’s time sat on the floor of a tiny Leeds flat remarking that he’s trying to create his Mona Lisa in order to get out of it, and it’s better than 95% of what passes for Rock and Roll today, but for the definitive Pile Up experience try their last single Birds and Planes. This is still, however, a ridiculously exciting look into a band that, if there’s any justice in the world, should conquer the world.
