DD/MM/YYYY – Black Square

‘Black Square’ is the debut album from Toronto hailed ‘DD/MM/YYYY’.
The album starts with the track ‘Bronzeage’, which throws you into the deep end of the ‘DD/MM/YYYY’ sound, showing there sublimely unique, experimental, punk influenced, electric sound.
The second track ‘No Life’ was pretty similar to ‘Bronzeage’ in terms of noise level. However, the third track ‘“They”’ shows ‘DD/MM/YYYY’ alternate softer sound, conveying there ability of versatility. The next track ‘Infinity Skull Cube’, was one of my favourite on the album. I was instantly won over by the repetitive infectious riffs and melodies, which structured the track and made it simply excellent. Although, I must admit the following track; ‘My Glasses’ consisted of a single frequency sound lasting for 1:04 which I thought was rather odd and kind of pointless excuse for a track. It did however, pave the way for the next track; ‘Birdtown’, and again highlighted ‘DD/MM/YYYY’ unique experimental sound.
‘Sirius’ was another one of my favourite tracks on the album, again due to ‘DD/MM/YYYY’ ability to create such infectious riffs but also due to its hint of indie which made for a lovely track which was both different and familiar at the same time. ‘Real eyes’ the ninth track on the album, was my third favourite track on the album, due to its faintly lingering Summer ’10 festival influenced sound, a lovely feeling and perfect pick me up on a grey day like today. The final track on the album was ‘Digital Haircut’, which was a lovely ending to a amazingly unique album.
‘DD/MM/YYYY’ are a great new input to the current indie electronic experimental area of the music scene of today. There unique, versatile yet similar, a great debut.
