‘There Is Nothing But Chemistry Here’ is the much-anticipated second EP from hotly tipped Brighton based newcomers Tall Ships. It’s a collection of five beautifully crafted, intricate soundscapes with heart melting harmonies that will further cement their growing reputation as one of the most exciting new bands around.
Wielding guitars, samplers, synths, bass, drums, Tall Ships fuse the energy and stylings of Battles and Foals with influences as wide ranging as Why?, Prince and Explosions In The Sky to create music that is dynamic and beautiful in equal measure.
‘There Is Noting But Chemistry Here’ was rather aptly recorded in a surf shack amongst the sand dunes on the north Cornwall coast and is a marked progression from their critically acclaimed eponymous debut EP, whose songs were initially written with the sole purpose of playing a few gigs at warehouse parties organized by their mates in Falmouth. Ric, Matt and Jamie met at university there and live rehearsals were held in the glamorous surroundings of the local Women’s Institute hall.
Despite having relocated to Brighton, they still collaborate with their artistic and talented West Country friends on everything from artwork to videos and remixes and with whom they formed a creative clan in Falmouth.
Live Tall Ships are a total must see band. Captivating to watch, they manically swap instruments, get theatrical with loop pedals and share vocal harmony duties with such energy and deftness you can’t help but be wowed by them. And the word is spreading – they’ve already played with the likes of Minus The Bear, Tubelord, Dananananaykroyd and Futureheads and have dates coming up with Maps and Atlases and 65 Days Of Static. Miss them at your peril.
Tall Ships are: Ric Phethean: Guitar/Vocals/Sampler, Matt Parker: Bass/Synth, Jamie Bush: Drums
