Harper Simon – Berkeley Girl

Berkeley Girl may be simple, but who‘s to say that’s a bad thing? Harper Simon’s new single is essentially a straightforward love song, rooted quite firmly in West Coast folk rock (the San Fran reference in the title is very apt in that respect, then). Sweet, relaxed vocals are backed up by an equally laid back acoustic melody, culminating in a charming, if not particularly mind-blowing little track. It’s emotional without being melodramatic, often bringing to mind folk songs of the 60s and 70s. Worth a listen – particularly if the vivid feeling of being suddenly transported to California appeals to you. You won’t be disappointed.
