To celebrate Dr. Martens 50th Annyversary, N.A.S.A cover Max Romeo’s Chase The Devil.
N.A.S.A is one of the 10 artists asked to record their version of a cult classic which represents the spirit of those who’ve worn DM’s over the past 50 years.
North America/South America – or more commonly known as N.A.S.A. – is an ongoing creative collaboration between two lifelong music aficionados, Squeak E. Clean (Sam Spiegel) and DJ Zegon (Ze Gonzales), and their friends, friends of friends and musical heroes.
United by their love of Brazilian funk, the pair hatched a plan to bring together the talents of artists from all walks of life. Soon after, their seventeen-track debut, The Spirit Of Apollo, was released. Famed for its many unpredictable collabs, the tracks themselves determined which artists were to perform it. “We never said, let’s make a track for this person. We’d usually make something we liked, and then as we were starting to write the song, it would tend to go in a direction that we’d be like, this sounds like George Clinton, or this sounds like Method Man.” explained Spiegel. It’s an approach that would see artists like M.I.A., Tom Waits, David Byrne, Karen O and Kanye West feature on the same album.
With a dozen animated music videos and a full-length documentary also in the offing, The Spirit Of Apollo isn’t just limited to audio form. Spiegel and Gonzales are clearly two artists capable of expressing themselves in many mediums.
N.A.S.A. continues to tour the world and has a number of music projects in the works, including the impending release of The Spirit Of Apollo remix album.
