The Like – Wishing He Was Dead

Retro revivalists The Like are back with their new single Wishing He Was Dead. The song has the classic pop vibe that has become synonymous with the group, yet beyond this winsome exterior is an ironically bitter sentiment as is made explicit in the opening lyrics: ‘If I could kick his head/ That fickle little boyfriend/ I’d be satisfied.’
The song echoes back to a sound of the sixties and seems to resonate both the attitude and sound of groups such as the Supremes, with catchy melodies and lyrics that have the potential to appeal to a wide range of people as is supported by the level of mainstream coverage that the song has been given.
After numerous line-up changes and shelved sessions, this single seems to secure the group and their sound. Ultimately there is very little about this song that you wouldn’t have heard elsewhere before; it is not avant-garde or musically groundbreaking but nor does it try to be; in this release The Like have in fact placed themselves as one of the forerunners in classic girl group revival.
(The Like’s New single Wishing He Was Dead is released on the 30th August followed by the album Release Me, out on the 6th September in the UK)
