Charlene Soraia – When We Were 5

Within a place of vivid imagination and idiosyncrasy lies Charlene Soraia’s debut single When we were 5. The song takes its listeners on a melodic journey, continually altering itself and introducing new components. The hushed opening bars develop into intricate chord progressions and trumpet flourishes, whilst Soraia’s own chilling and emotive vocals bring a tragic beauty to the track. At over six minutes long this is an ambitious choice for a debut single and in particular the mellow opening may struggle to grab the attention of new listeners.
Soraia’s avant-garde approach shows a great level of musical ambition and originality that should be commended. However, even her musical adroitness, which has inspired the diversity of ideas and components within the song, fails to capture me. The song is reminiscent of a lullaby rather than a single in that its beauty washes over you, inspiring imagination whilst failing to grab ones attention. Ultimately although the ambition and imagination behind what Soraia is trying to create can undoubtedly be heard, it is at times misplaced. Nevertheless, the talent and diversity exhibited within this song indicate great promise for Soraia’s debut album Moonchild.
(Soraia’s debut album Moonchild is due for release in October)
