An Investigation Into Juke House
aaamusic | On 13, Aug 2010
From the musically fertile area of Chicago’s Southside, the sound of Juke was born. Evolving from the earlier, raw sounds of Chicago house music, many have considered Cajmere’s classic ‘Perculator’ to be it’s ‘year zero’. This highly energetic strain centres itself around frenetic, syncopated drum patterns, using the rousing elements of both hip-hop and house. It’s also synonymous with a hyper-energetic, complex dance style called ‘footwurking’ – appearing to be a hybrid of jazz-dance and breaking – that has people expressing moves to tempos that often clear 150 bpm.
Recently, this sound has been popularised in the UK by recent singles paying homage to the indigenous sound of Juke. Addison Groove’s monster ‘Footcrab’ joined the dots between Juke and dubstep and Planet Mu have released ‘Hatas Our Motivation’ by Chicago native DJ Nate. They are also set to release a slew of tracks from other producers such as DJ Roc later this year. Thanks to this, the circulation of other key tracks and various YouTube clips, Juke is starting to get international recognition, and we are very excited to present this feature – including 3 limited period digital samplers for £1 each; writing on the genre from Planet Mu’s Mike Paradinas and Ghettophiles’ Chrissy Murderbot; “Best of Juke” charts from some of Chicago’s leading DJs; and brand new digital catalogue previously unavailable digitally.
