Lady Antebellum – I Run To You

Blending two obscenely tuneful vocalists in a male/female duet, ‘I Run To You’ by Lady Antebellum is the dreamy pop soundtrack to the credits of a thousand romantic films as of now. Combining blissful singing ability with a totally accessible soft rock sound, this track pulls at every guilty pleasure and cheesy heartstring available in the human body, not just because of the spot-on “uplifting” lyricism (check it out: “This world keeps spinning faster/To a new disaster/So I run to you”) but the fact that, well, no matter how incredibly romantic-cliché it may be, it is just that good. So it’s not exactly breaking the mould, but everything from the soft croons to the gentle keyboard blanketing the song to the caresses of guitar and that oh-so-tantalising soaring chorus with its power ballad drumming, and the slow dance bridge with its emotional cadences and vocal interplay. It is a distinctly American song, with hints of country to be found in the melodic shape, and the singing being that particular brand of apple-pie wholesome.
If you can’t stand anything so shining-eyed and squeaky-clean, you would do well to stick to old Blighty’s own brand of maudlin rainy-day popular music. However, if you’re in the mood for some well-crafted and totally cliché enjoyment, then this is perfect for those daydream montages you piece together in those in-between days of walking the dog, or writing letters to your true love, or whatever it is you lovely sunny people who listen to this type of radio fodder do for fun.
