Little Fish are a band with an impressive resume behind them even at this early stage of their career. Support slots with Them Crooked Vultures, Alice in Chains and Hole, production duties headed by Linda Perry and a show at the Viper Room in California are all well and good, but it counts for nought if the band themselves aren’t up to scratch. Fortunately however, they are and then some.

Floating in on ominous electric guitar chords, singer Juju begins proceedings with a delicate snarl that brings to mind Courtney Loves earlier work with the aforementioned Hole with added restraint, drummer Nez Greenaway punctuating her words with feral drum wallops. The duo pull off the astonishing trick of managing to turn up the proverbial thermostat throughout the song without the tension exploding, that is until the final stretch of the song when the guitar entirely drops out and Juju howls the words “Sorry you were LATE”. The question of the title has clearly been answered by this point. After that the whole band hurtles in, Juju shrieking like a woman possessed and it becomes hard to believe that the noise is being generated by two people. If their debut can live up to this single then it is going to be one of the year’s best. A triumph.
